Chemistry Applications
SIMA delivers flexible chemistry configurations for use across a large range of space- and time-scales. While complex atmospheric chemistry has been previously supported in CESM (see CAM-chem and MUSICA), SIMA continues to invest in enhancing the existing chemical capabilities within CESM. These include the development and implementation of the Model-Independent Chemistry Module (MICM) that connects chemical mechanism information in a database to the chemistry code and its solvers, as well as refactoring the aerosol code with abstract interfaces to provide the ability to interface CAM and MICM with different aerosol models. Combined with the SIMA weather configurations, these new chemistry capabilities will enable studies in air-quality and pollution, which have not been previously supported in CESM. In addition to further developing the chemistry code, SIMA supports specific chemistry projects relying on these new capabilities for both the Spectral-Element (SE) and MPAS dynamical cores as documented below.
